Updated Simulation Studies of Damage Limit of Lhc Tertiary Collimators
نویسندگان
چکیده
The tertiary collimators (TCTs) in the LHC, installed in front of the experiments, in standard operation intercept fractions of 10 halo particles. However, they risk to be hit by high-intensity primary beams in case of asynchronous beam dump. TCT damage thresholds were initially inferred from results of destructive tests on a TCT jaw, supported by numerical simulations, assuming simplified impact scenarios with one single bunch hitting the jaw with a given impact parameter. In this paper, more realistic failure conditions, including a train of bunches and taking into account the full collimation hierarchy, are used to derive updated damage limits. The results are used to update the margins in the collimation hierarchy and could thus potentially have an influence on the LHC performance.

Preliminary Exploratory Study of Different Phase Ii Collimators
The LHC collimation system is installed and commissioned in different phases, following the natural evolution of the LHC performance. To improve cleaning efficiency towards the end of the low beta squeeze at 7TeV, and in stable physics conditions, it is foreseen to complement the 30 highly robust Phase I secondary collimators with low impedance Phase II collimators. At this stage, their design ...
متن کاملSimulations of Damage to Carbon Collimators Caused Due to Full Impact of LHC Beam
The LHC will operate at 7 TeV with a luminosity of 10 cms. This requires two beams, each with 2808 bunches. The nominal intensity per bunch is 1.1 × 10 protons and the transverse particle intensity profile is Gaussian with a standard deviation, σ = 0.2 mm. The bunch length is 0.5 ns and two neighboring bunches are separated by 25 ns. The energy stored in each beam of 362 MJ. In previous papers ...
متن کاملProtecting Lhc Components against Radiation Resulting from an Unsynchronized Beam Abort∗
The effect of possible accidental beam loss in the LHC on the IP5 and IP6 insertion elements is studied via realistic Monte Carlo simulations. The scenario studied is beam loss due to unsynchronized abort at an accidental prefire of one of the abort kicker modules. Simulations show that this beam loss would result in severe heating of the IP5 and IP6 superconducting (SC) quadrupoles. Contrary t...
متن کاملMechanical and Thermal Prototype Testing for a Rotatable Collimator for the Lhc Phase Ii Collimation Upgrade∗
The Phase II upgrade to the LHC collimation system calls for complementing the robust Phase I graphite collimators with high Z, low impedance Phase II collimators. The design for the collimation upgrade has not been finalized. One option is to use metallic rotatable collimators and testing of this design will be discussed here. The Phase II collimators must be robust in various operating condit...
متن کاملA New Approach for Stress State - Dependent Flow Localization Failure Bounded Through Ductile Damage in Dynamically Loaded Sheets
In this paper, a new approach is proposed for stress state - dependent flow localization in bifurcation failure model bounded through ductile damage in dynamically loaded sheets. Onset of localized necking is considered in phenomenological way for different strain rates to draw the forming limit diagram (FLD). Using a strain metal hardening exponent in the Vertex theory related to the strain ra...
